What’s In A Tune-Up?

Although most drivers are familiar with the term tune-up, only some understand what it entails. The ASE-certified technicians at A&J Automotive are happy to provide relevant information so that you feel comfortable with the services you receive. Typical preventive maintenance visits include oil and filter changes, fluid checks and tops, and tire pressure monitoring and rotation/balancing. A tune-up is not needed nearly as frequently as these services, but it is eventually necessary for the efficient and reliable operation of your transportation. One area that needs attention is the fuel system. This is the visit when the fuel filter(s) should be changed and the fuel system cleaned. This includes taking care of the injectors to remove any debris that can lead to a clog. As a related service, the throttle body should be cleaned, too, as it allows air into the engine to meet the fuel for combustion. Further, the engine‘s air filter should be replaced to ensure that it doesn’t become clogged. If applicable to your specific model, your mechanic will also set the timing to ensure that the cylinders are compressing optimally during combustion. Finally, the spark plugs and their wires should be replaced during a tune-up. These parts are durable and fire reliably after each start. However, the metal tips eventually wear, threatening the reliability of the spark and reducing performance/economy.
