The Most Common Issues
Every modern vehicle sold in the United States has an emissions system to limit the amount of toxins spewed into the air. There are a number of problems that may develop within your vehicle’s emissions system, and you’ll need to get a repair if one develops. For instance, one of the most common troubles is an oxygen sensor that has gone bad. This part measures the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust to enable your auto’s computer to adjust the fuel-air mixture. Also, the mass airflow sensor can fail. This component accounts for the amount of air entering the engine to contribute to the combustion process. Either of these will decrease fuel economy and performance if they aren’t working properly. Another source of trouble is a leaking exhaust manifold. It’s responsible for delivering exhaust fumes from the cylinders where combustion has occurred to the catalytic converter. If the manifold(s) leaks, toxins escape. The catalytic converter, too, can go bad, although this is less common. Unfortunately, the more frequent issue with this component is theft. The catalytic converter uses precious metals to cause chemical reactions that change the most environmentally damaging gasses to less impactful fumes. While the check engine light itself is not an emissions problem, it will indeed illuminate if there is trouble in this system. You’ll need to correct the underlying cause to turn the light off and have your car pass inspection.
