North Carolina Requirements
Unless you sport an antique vehicle that meets the 30-plus-year-old exemption, your automobile requires an annual safety inspection in North Carolina in order to renew the registration. This must be done by a licensed mechanic at a state licensed facility. When you bring your car to A&J Automotive for inspection, we’ll follow the DMV protocol, checking for the presence and functionality of the required elements. For example, all lighting must work properly. This includes headlights, turn signals, and accessory lights such as the one that illuminates the license plate. Also, we check to be sure the brakes, parking brakes, and steering work as expected. Furthermore, we ensure that the windshield wipers and horn work. The rearview mirror must be present, and window tinting that has been added aftermarket cannot be beyond the legal darkness/opacity. We also check the condition and tread depth of the tires. Finally, the exhaust and emissions control components must be present, intact, and functional. Beyond the safety assessment, your vehicle must undergo emissions testing if it is registered in certain counties. 19 of the state’s 100 counties, including Wake and the surrounding counties, are part of the emissions testing area. If your car is registered in a county other than Wake, feel free to ask us whether it is subject to annual emissions testing as part of the inspection and registration process.
